IPTV Connection Formats: Xtream Codes, M3U and MAG Explained
There are three ways an IPTV service reaches your player, and choosing the wrong one is the single most common reason a setup half-works — channels playing but no guide, or an empty on-demand section.
They deliver the same channels. What differs is how much structure arrives with them, and that difference decides whether 24,000 channels are usable or just a very long list.

Short version: use Xtream Codes unless something forces you not to. Keep an M3U link as well, because it is the fastest way to prove a line works when something breaks.
Xtream Codes: what it is and why it is the default
Xtream Codes is an API rather than a file. Your player asks the server three questions — what channels exist, what is on them, and what is in the on-demand library — and the server answers each separately.
That separation is the entire advantage. Because the channel list, the guide data and the VOD catalogue arrive as distinct, structured responses, the app can organise them: categories in the right order, a grid guide that populates, a Movies section that is genuinely separate from live TV.

The port number, which causes most failures
A server address often needs a port on the end, something like http://example.com:8080. Leave off :8080 and the app cannot reach the right service — and it reports a generic authorisation failure that looks exactly like a wrong password.

M3U playlists: simplest, least organised
An M3U playlist is a single long web address containing your entire channel list as plain text. There is nothing to configure. Paste it into almost any media player and channels appear.
That simplicity is also its limitation. Everything arrives as one flat list, so you get little or no guide data, weak categorisation, and usually no on-demand section at all.
Where M3U genuinely wins
As a diagnostic. If a channel will not play in your usual app, open the same line in VLC with an M3U link. If it plays there, your subscription is fine and the fault is the app or the device. If it fails in both, the problem is upstream.

Where M3U is required
Device-key apps — the players common on Samsung and LG televisions, where the app shows a code on screen and you attach the playlist from a web dashboard — almost always expect an M3U URL rather than Xtream Codes. See Samsung setup.
MAG portals: MAC address and portal URL
MAG boxes work unlike everything else. There is no app to install and no username to type. The box identifies itself by its MAC address, a fixed twelve-character code, and that address has to be authorised on the provider’s side before anything loads.
This reverses the usual order. With every other format you buy first and set up second. With MAG you send us the MAC address before activation, because the subscription is bound to that specific box. It is the most common reason a MAG setup stalls.

Why your guide or VOD section is empty
This is the symptom that sends people looking for a fault that does not exist. In most cases nothing is broken — the format simply does not carry what you are looking for.

What is the difference between Xtream Codes and M3U?
Xtream Codes is an API where you enter a server URL, username and password, and the server supplies channels, guide data and on-demand content as separate structured responses. An M3U playlist is a single URL containing a flat channel list, usually with little guide data and no VOD section. Both deliver the same channels; Xtream Codes delivers far more structure.
Which IPTV format should I use?
Xtream Codes, unless your app forces otherwise. Device-key apps on Samsung and LG televisions generally need an M3U link, VLC only accepts M3U, and MAG boxes only accept a portal URL with an authorised MAC address.
Why is my IPTV guide empty?
Most often because you are connected with an M3U link, which frequently carries little or no guide data. It can also be that the guide has not finished downloading, which takes two to three minutes on first setup, or that your device clock and time zone are wrong.
Why is there no Movies or Series section in my app?
M3U playlists usually carry no on-demand content at all, so the section stays empty regardless of settings. Ask your provider for Xtream Codes details instead, which supply the VOD catalogue as a separate response.
What is a MAG portal URL?
It is the address a MAG box loads its channel list from, entered under Settings, System Settings, Servers, Portals. MAG boxes do not use a username and password; they identify themselves by MAC address, which must be authorised by the provider before the portal will load anything.
Why does my Xtream Codes login keep failing?
The most common cause is a server URL missing its port number, such as leaving off :8080. That produces a generic authorisation failure identical to a wrong password. Check the port first, include http:// or https://, and paste the details rather than typing them.
Can I switch between formats later?
